Volunteer & Spread Some Pawsitive Karma

When I Look Into The Eyes Of An Animal I Do Not See An Animal. I See A Living Being. I See A Friend. I Feel A Soul…
A.D. Williams

Pawsitive Karma Rescue is a family of dedicated volunteers and fosters whose mission is finding loving homes for all of the very special animals in our care. We strive to promote a nurturing, supportive and friendly environment for everyone who so unselfishly donates their time and energy to providing a better life for the ones without a voice. Without the hard work of volunteers and the compassion of adopters committed to providing forever homes, PKR would not be able to save so many wonderful animals that had no other way to live. You can find opportunities to volunteer below.

How You Can Make A Difference To Pawsitive Karma Rescue

Make A Difference

Pawsitive Karma Rescue would not exist without our volunteers but, in order to grow and increase our life saving capabilities, we need to expand our volunteer base. PKR offers a variety of volunteer opportunities that cover a wide range of vocations and interests.

DATA ENTRY: Want to volunteer but can’t leave the house? This is a great way to help save lives from the home or office. All you’ll need is a computer and internet access. PKR uses several databases to track the animals, volunteers and adopters in our program and most are user friendly. Petpoint is the only database that requires a short training webinar prior to any actual data entry.

VOICEMAILS: More comfortable on the phone? We receive many calls and voicemails each day. This is a flexible volunteer position that allows you to set your own schedule. You will need a phone, a computer and internet access or just a Smartphone to access the voicemail program. You will also need to familiarize yourself with PKR’s policies and procedures so you can answer questions correctly and confidently.

MARKETING MANAGER: Have Great Ideas? We are looking for ways to spread the word about PKR and our cause! We need volunteers who are committed to marketing our group and our animals.

EVENT COORDINATOR: Are you creative? We love to host events starring our rescue pets and are always looking for unique and creative ways to introduce our animals to the public. We also host monthly themed adoption events at various local venues and are in desperate need of someone to plan and coordinate these events.

FLYER/NEWSLETTER DESIGNER: Great at designing flyers? When hosting events we like to make professional and appealing flyer to advertise the event. We also make flyers for causes and long stay animals. PKR would like to start hosting a monthly newsletter.

BIO OR BLOG WRITER: Great with words? PKR often takes in under socialized, sick, or injured animals and each of these animals has a story to tell. This position would include writing animal bios, preparing feature stories for different animals every month, maintaining a PKR blog about animal health and nutrition, training, helpful resources, volunteer opportunities, event…and these are just a few examples. The sky is really the limit here. This is probably the most effective means we have of spreading the word about PKR and our mission.

VENDOR/DONATION MANAGER: Can you bring in the goods? PKR is in constant need of supplies for our foster animals and we especially need to be prepared for each puppy and kitten season. This person would be responsible for acquiring donations of food and supplies and negotiating reasonable prices for the supplies we must purchase. This is an extremely important position because we can’t properly care for our animals without supplies.

Leadership Roles: Great leader? We have numerous volunteer positions such as: foster manager, volunteer coordinator, shelter coordinator, and much more! But we ask that the interested volunteer spend a bit of time volunteering with our group to get the feel of things before taking on a leadership role. We take our program’s animals wellbeing seriously and a leadership role is a serious commitment. We also want to make sure you are happy with our group before investing time in a position. Please reach out to us and let us know what role you would like to potentially take on so that we can start you on the right track with volunteer opportunities.

If you have a volunteer idea that wasn’t listed, please feel free to let us know about it. We welcome any input that might improve our volunteer efforts.

Interact With Animals

Dog Trainer: Since we often pull adult animals with a rough past, we are always in need of a dog trainer. Many of the animals we pull have had no training history or have little socialization. We also pull mom and puppy litters. The mom dogs often need basic training, as do the puppies.

Feral Kitten Socialization: This is a fun job because you get to play with kittens! One of the obstacles of socializing a feral kitten is the kitten only becomes socialized with the foster parent. To prevent this it is helpful to have volunteers come interact with the kitten during its socializing process. This will keep the kitten from only trusting one person. This is mainly for foster parents who do not have a lot of people in the home. The volunteer would go to their home and spend some time petting and playing with the kitten.

Transport: Help transport animals or supplies to their proper destination! This is always a HUGE need. Go to the “transport” page to read more about transporting.

Foster: Fostering is one of the most rewarding and emotional volunteer opportunities. It is amazing how opening your home to a foster pet temporary can make such a huge impact. It’s a temporary commitment to save a life. It makes you wonder why everyone doesn’t try fostering! Click here for Foster Application. See the next toggle below for more information on fostering.

Foster

Fostering is one of the most rewarding and emotional volunteer opportunities. It is amazing how opening your home to a foster pet temporary can make such a huge impact. It’s a temporary commitment to save a life. It makes you wonder why everyone doesn’t try fostering! Click here for Foster Application.

Keep in mind, fostering is fun but it is also a serious commitment. The foster parent holds the power of how quickly their foster pet finds their new forever home. Fostering takes time and hard work, but in the end it is the best feeling when your foster pet find a forever home. Fostering a pet until adoption can be as short as 2 weeks to as long as 6-9 months. It all depends on the animal’s health, behavior, and age. Our foster screeners will ask you vital questions about your lifestyle so that they can match you with the best foster choice.

A quick outline of the step-by-step process of fostering:

HAPPY: Most animals that have come from the shelters have been through a lot. As a foster you provide an environment for your animal that makes them feel safe and relaxed. By giving your foster plenty of love and attention you will lift their spirits up in no time!

HEALTHY: There is always the possibility of an animal to become ill from the shelter. We require a 10-day quarantine period for your foster pet from any household pets. This can be anywhere from a bedroom to a bathroom. We ask for open communication between the foster managers and foster parent if any signs of illness irrupt.

HOME: Once your foster is healthy and happy it is ready to find it’s perfect home! As a foster you need to promote your animal. It is important to attend photos shoots sponsored by “Y.E.S. Photography” for great action shots of your foster pet. It is also helpful to try to take good video of your foster to show them off! We ask for help with advertising on craigslist and other websites in hopes to finding a forever home for your foster pet.

Foster Help: Can’t foster? There are still ways you can interact with a foster pet! Even if you can’t keep a foster pet in your home you can still sponsor a foster pet with your time. There are times that foster parents have a lot going on at once. Sometimes walking their foster dog, or playing with their foster cat for an hour can make a huge difference to the foster parent. We don’t want a busy schedule to deter potential fosters away. A few ways to help a foster parent: Bathe or groom the dogs/puppies, take the dogs out for a walk, play with the dogs/cats, help clean crates/rooms, take photos/video, help feed, and much more!

Transport

Transporting is crucial for what we do. We often have short deadlines to get animals out of high kill shelters. Fosters also immediately need supplies when they receive a new or sick foster pet. Getting supplies to foster parents same day is just as crucial. Rescue is a fast paced organization and it is easy for us to miss the opportunity to save an animal because of lack of transport. Our transporters are our lifesavers!

Local Transport – When we pull an animal from a local shelter we often need help transporting the animal to foster care. We also need transport for animals to attend vet appointments, adoption events, and photo shoots. If you cannot transport animals, we also need help with transporting supplies to foster parents and picking up donations.

Instate Transport – We pull animals from all over central Texas. When it comes time for a pull, we often have a very short deadline. We need transporters that are comfortable picking up the animals from the shelter and meeting at a central location to deliver the animals to their new foster parents. Our most common “out of town” city we pull from is San Antonio.

Out of State Transport – Once in a while we perform an out of state adoption. We generally have 2-4 weeks notice before needing out of state transport. This transporter would also need to be comfortable doing a “home visit” when arriving with the dog or cat.
