Say Hi To Toffee

If you like a quirky, loving, companionable, housebroken cat with zest and zeal, a bit of a naughty streak, yet an inability to mess with your kitchen counters or shelves, Toffee may be just the gal for you!

Back story: Toffee was a very young, emaciated mother – still practically a kitten herself – and probably hit by a car, leading to her having a shattered hind-end. Despite all that working against her, and finding herself a homeless stray in an open-intake shelter at the time Hurricane Harvey hit, she selflessly raised and nursed three kittens of her own and one motherless baby. She was a very good, sweet mother!

PKR pulled her and her little family from the shelter as it continued to fill to bursting with coastal evacuees. They stayed in foster care with us, getting over ringworm they had caught at the shelter, and Toffee’s hind end gradually healed and gained strength so that she could walk and even run and climb a little again. (Although she still can’t jump up on countertops, so those are safe!)

A consult with an Austin veterinary surgeon showed that she did not need surgery, and should have no health issues except maybe needing a softer diet when she gets up in years to prevent constipation. (So far, so good.)

She also put on healthy weight (thanks to her continuous great appetite), and her spunky, kitteny personality started to reawaken as her babies grew bigger and more independent, and she no longer had to play the stoic, dutiful mom.

Friendly (loves people and kittens or cats smaller than her, doesn’t hide from strangers, good with dogs (lives with a large one that ignores her), okay with cats, but she is insecure due to her limited hind-end strength and small size, and can act actively antisocial to bigger/stronger/more forward animals as a defense until she gets more comfortable, which can take a several weeks or so).

Feisty (can be wiley and mouthy/rough when she plays. Not aggressive, has never broken skin, but looks a bit like a wild cat. She will also run and dart under furniture if you try to get her before she’s ready to be gotten, but she’ll let you fish her out without incident. She is determined to do all the things a “normal” cat does, but in her own way, and has been able to climb up in bed by hopping at the edge and pulling herself up. Similar to how she gets on the back of the couch. A stool might help her get up easier.)

Squirrelly (Complete with fluffy tail! She loves playing, food, carrying toys in her mouth, batting balls, climbing the couch, using scratching pad on floor, chewing apart cardboard box flaps. She surprisingly well-tolerates wearing decorative sweaters! And probably your favorite team’s jersey on game day!)

Affectionate (loves to be near you, to be petted, to snuggle, and will nap with you and “groom” you. She has no concept of personal space – prepare to be whisker-kissed occasionally in the wee hours, and for her to insert herself to try to recreate the spaghetti-eating scene from Lady and the Tramp with you if you’re eating something she finds interesting!)

Special Needs:
Open litter box (Due to previous pelvis injury, she can’t squat very well, so uses edge of box to put her front paws to get her front end higher than her back end. Has no problems or accidents outside the box).

Recommend no people with thin skin (she’s never broken skin, but she can be very mouthy when she plays, and it might be too much for sensitive people – if she mouths you, blowing in her face can get her to stop).

Toffee is fully-vetted and ready to go! Feel free to contact with any questions or to set up a meet-and-greet.
