Over the last two months, Pawsitive Karma Rescue has saved 31 dogs from a San Antonio shelter who were only days, and even hours away from euthanasia. Without the support of our volunteers, four inspirational momma dogs and their adorable 27 puppies aged 4 to 8 weeks would have faced death.

These Moms have worked so hard to keep their babies alive in an unhealthy and stressful shelter environment. Hannah, one of our four moms, weighed less than half of her proper body weight, while our german shepherd mom came in filthy, covered with ticks, and emaciated. Momma german shepherd instantly wagged her tail with hope upon arrival of our PKR volunteers to the San Antonio shelter. Little did we know hours later she would have to be hooked up to an IV for fluid support for 24 hours.

The moms have cared for their puppies through parvo and malnutrition. Now the puppies have received the nutrition and care they needed from Mom, Mom has not yet received the care that she needs. Most of our puppies have found their forever homes, but now it is Mom’s turn.

3 out of our 4 momma dogs have tested positive for heartworms. Heartworms are transmitted by mosquitos that ultimately cause worms to grow into the heart and lungs of the infected dogs. Initially there are no symptoms, but as the disease progresses dogs can begin to develop breathing difficulties, a severe cough, lack of energy and appetite, weight loss, and liver failure. Heartworms are treatable, and often curable, but without treatment, heartworms are capable of causing death.

We want to thank everyone who has supported Pawsitive Karma Rescue and these Mom dogs by donating and participating in our car wash fundraister to help our mom dogs!
